This is where probably one of the most famous independent family business started by Bill Smith who all ready was well known on the racing circuit riding for Honda in 1959 on the first Japanese imported bikes to the UK. He was riding a RC161 125cc race bike along side great legends such as AGOSTINI, SURTEES, HAILWOOD AND READ.
Bill won many accolades none more impressive as the 1978 formula 3 world title. Those that follow racing will know him as a TT legend with 50 replicas to his name. In the 60s motorcycle sales boomed and the business flourished. We were the first franchised dealer for HONDA and interest in the imported Japanese bikes was intense. The 70s and 80s saw the introduction of SUZUKI, KAWASAKI and YAMAHA. BILL SMITH MOTORS WAS BORN.

Mr W has been brewing beer since 1998 but the concept for the WC Brewery didn't emerge until three years later when long-standing friend Mr C asked for a special bottled beer to commemorate his upcoming wedding. The first collaboration was deemed a resounding success and prompted The Gents to continue their joint brewing venture by supplying friends and family with small bottling runs. The solid foundations for the brewery were now in place and in 2003 the WC Brewery was Formerly created, initially as a non-trading limited company.
Their big break came in 2005 when they were able to donate a beer for the Chester Charity Beer Festival. It was a proud moment for The Gents, not only was it their first beer that the public at large would taste, but Top Trump also became the first festival beer to be brewed in Chester. The beer proved very popular, becoming the fastest selling beer of the festival and the first to sell out. Buoyed by this success, it was time to look into going commercial. New larger equipment was purchased and Mr C used his design skills to launch the website and produce the new range of pumpclips. Their first commercial brew was Hubble Bubble Toilet Trouble and went to the Mill Hotel in Chester in October 2005.
In early 2006, Mr W attended a three week course at Brewlab and was amongst the first group to pass the new Certificate in Practical Brewing accredited by Sunderland University. This newfound knowledge was immediately put to good use as larger equipment was purchased and a more efficient brewing process implemented. Old recipes were then reformulated and new ale styles were introduced.
The brewery currently has a brewlength of only 10 gallons but this allows great flexibility in creating new and innovative ales by experimenting with a wide variety of hops and malt types. As members of the Craft Brewing Association, the WC Brewery is committed to producing quality hand-crafted real ales. Each stage of the brewing process, from mash-in right through to cask washing, is carried out by hand to ensure that each cask leaves the brewery in perfect condition.
We don't use artificial flavourings. We don't use preservatives.
Beers are brewed using only hops, barley, wheat, yeast, and our own water. Brewing liquor is treated with gypsum to increase hardness (of the water not the drinker), Irish Moss finings are used in the boil and the casks are racked with Isinglass finings.
The Gents are so committed to quality that they can often be found in the smallest room in the brewery tasting their golden samples, just as a vineyard owner would check for problems by regularly inspecting his grapes. Remember, a little part of The Gents goes into every pint we brew! |
