The hospital stench. The blood. The lecherous surgeon.
Mary Helsall does not like being a nurse.
It's a job that will have to suffice for now. At least until she has achieved the task she came to the city to do. In the meantime, rotgut gin and a volatile relationship with hospital porter Anthony will help her get through each day.
But who is the mysterious patient who claims to know what she's got to hide? He knows all about her infatuation with a thief-taker, about her connection to the notorious Northgate Gaol, and about the shocking events of her recent past.
From the stormy seashore to the screams of the operating theatre, and from a backstreet gin shop to the foetid dungeons of the prison, Mary searches for an independent future.
Before she can find it, she must fight the attraction of oblivion and make a choice between duty, money, and a love overshadowed by addiction
Roads & Trackways of North Wales By Tim Prevett
Now and again, a book is published which adds significantly to public knowledge of our countryside and the history of the landscape in which it is located. ‘The Roads & Trackways of North Wales’, a new book, does just that.
Driving along the A5 from Chirk to Anglesey, are a succession of signs stating that the road is a ‘Historic Route’. This book shows that the A5 is a comparative newcomer, with many others in North Wales which are ten – twenty times older.
Some of the roads were pre-historic when they were utilised by the Romans and two thousand years on, still remain in use.
The packhorse way being succeeded by the cart, coach and motor vehicle, in many cases preserves a route-way that had its origins in pre-history. The old road from Rowen to Aber – Bwlch Y Ddeufaen, or the pass of two stones – still has the two huge way-markers as well as a cromlech at the side of the roadway.
Author Tim Prevett begins the book looking at the evidence for such old roads and then moves on to examine the Roman roads, pilgrims’ routes, drovers’ roads and subsequent highways up to the turnpikes, including Telford’s A5, the London to Holyhead route for Dublin-bound travellers.
He has carefully included lots of maps and photographs to illustrate the text. They make it much easier to understand the locations he describes. There is a lot packed into the book’s 160pp and it is competitively priced at £14.99. With its eye-catching cover of sheep still using the Bwlch Y Ddeufaen route, the author shows us how much of our heritage we can easily take for granted and how much of our countryside has been shaped by our forefathers and mothers.

About
-A comprehensive history of the city of Chester
-Fully illustrated throughout with atmospheric images and photographs
-Review coverage in local press; POS available
The history of the city of Chester is so much more than the occupying
Roman Legions and the walled fortress that they built on a sandstone
outcrop overlooking the River Dee. This book investigates the very
earliest settlement of the site prior to the Roman invasion, as well as looking at the
various periods of settlement, notable characters and important events that have
helped to shape the city that stands today.
For well over 1400 years Chester remained a centre of religious, military and
political power, as well as one of the most pre-eminent trading ports in all of
England. Throughout its history, it has played host to some of the most notable
characters of the age, including the Anglo Saxon King Egbert, William the
Conqueror and the eight Norman Earls who ruled the city and its wider regions
for well over 160 years. The two great Plantagenet monarchs, Henry III and his
militaristic son Edward Longshanks used Chester as their base for the vicious
military campaigns that they waged against the royal Princes of Wales. The
usurper King Henry IV came to Chester to oust the legitimate monarch Richard
II from his throne and the city of Chester also hosted Henry “Hotspur” Percy who
faced Bolingbroke at the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403. The city and its people
also remained resolute during the 17th century Civil War siege which witnessed
the bombardment and starvation of Chester’s Royalist defenders in defence of the
ill-fated monarch Charles I who later lost his head.
The past 200 years have not been so glorious however and a good deal of the
ancient city, including its Norman Castle, has been largely swept away in the rush
to create a regional tourist attraction, often at the cost of the city’s most important
architectural treasures. The old city will live on, however, in this fascinating new
title The Illustrated History of Chester.
